Recently I watch the movie “Doubt.” This was such a spectacular performance by Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman, who happens to by my favorite actor of all time. The following are some of my favorite quotes form the movie.
One interesting observation I had was how rigid and intolerant Sister Aloysious was. Her judgement was clouded by her prejudice and feelings and not based on the facts. in fact she was making whatever facts fit in a story that fit her belief system. This is very similar to how many people here in Kuwait & the middle east are when it comes to religion and Islam. so intolerant of change and progress. This is not to say that all progress and change is good or bad, but just because it is change does not make it bad.
Here are the quotes.
Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty. When you are lost, you are not alone. -Father Brendan Flynn
[to Sister James] There are people who go after your humanity, Sister, that tell you that the light in your heart is a weakness. Don’t believe it. It’s an old tactic of cruel people to kill kindness in the name of virtue. –Father Brendan Flynn
[to Father Flynn] I have no sympathy for you. I know you are invulnerable to true regret. -Sister Aloysius Beauvier
Even if you feel certainty, it is an emotion not a fact. –Father Brendan Flynn
Sister Aloysius Beauvier: [Angrily referring to cough drops] Candy!
Sister James: Cough drops.
Sister Aloysius Beauvier: Candy by another name!
